President's Biography
Robert (Bob) C.W. Howard, BSc, FCIA, FSA
Bob Howard is Assistant Vice-President, Financial Management Actuarial with Sun Life Financial in Waterloo, Ontario. His current responsibility is as practice leader for pricing in Canada. Sun Life Financial is a leading international financial services organization providing a diverse range of protection and wealth accumulation products and services to individuals and corporate customers.
Mr. Howard holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from McMaster University in Hamilton, and he qualified as an actuary with both the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and the Society of Actuaries in 1974. He has spent most of his career in the life insurance field.
He started his career in 1971 with Mutual Life of Canada in Waterloo, the city he has worked in ever since. In 2000, Mutual Life went through a demutualization process and became Clarica, which subsequently amalgamated with Sun Life in 2002.
A long-time volunteer for the Institute, Mr. Howard became President-elect in 2008. He has three priorities for his term of office, “The actuarial profession in Canada is facing significant challenges in pension reform, the implementation of International Financial Reporting Standards, and the establishment of Enterprise Risk Management as an actuarial specialty. My goal is to tackle these challenges successfully with the help of a very capable Board of Directors and the efforts of several hundred volunteers.”
